KDS Group sponsored 10k Paisley run a huge success

Paisley 10k The Paisley 10K was a huge success with over 1,400 athletes crossing the finish line in County Square; more then doubling the 10-year-old event’s previous best line-up.

KDS were proud to have sponsored this great event and are looking forward to building further partnerships with Renfrewshire Council.

And the winner, Eritrean athlete Tsegai Tewelde, also smashed the course record when he romped home in a staggering time of 29 minutes 47 seconds.

Nineteen-year-old Tewelde – an asylum seeker who hopes to run for Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – was followed home by his countrymen Tsegezgab Woldmichael and Amanuel Hagos.

The winner told the Paisley Daily Express: “This was my first time in Paisley but I enjoyed it. The course was tough as it had lots of twists in it but I’m delighted to have won.”

Kilbarchan whippet Hayley Haining also shone as she prepares for the Berlin Marathon in three weeks time, winning the women’s race and coming seventh overall in a time of 34 minutes, eight seconds.

The 37-year-old said: “It was a tough race but I felt relaxed through out it. There was a nice breeze during the race which helped. I think we have had the best day for the weather this month.

“This is my last race before Berlin. This event was a milestone for me to see how my fitness is ahead of that competition and I felt really good.

“That is all the long running done now, so I can focus on just levelling out my fitness ahead of the trip to Germany.”

Kilbarchan Athletic Club’s Scott Hawkins, 19, from Elderslie, was the first local athlete home when he finished in sixth place.

But it wasn’t just the serious competitors who took part, with people of all ages joining in the fun to pound the pavements as they made their way through the town’s streets.

The starter’s pistol was fired at County Square at 10am to get the 10K race under way, with a 3K fun run, featuring mums, dads and young kids, setting off two hours later.

This was the tenth annual Paisley Vision 10K race and organisers were determined to make sure the 2009 version was the biggest and best yet.

Councillor George Adam took part in the race and was delighted to see the town packed out with people.

He even managed to brush off the disappointment of losing out to his SNP boss and council leader Derek Mackay, who beat him by some margin.

Councillor Adam said: “The whole day has been fantastic. I love seeing the town centre so busy. It’s great for Paisley that Buddies always come out in their numbers.

“The 10K event has got better and better every year and people always look forward to it. It’s all part of the healthy lifestyle that we want to promote.

“I enjoyed this year’s event even though I lost out to Derek. He’s very competitive while I’m just here for the fun aspect. I have to let him away with that because he’s the leader!”
