Youth: Code Red!

Today, the Youth Academy were paid a visit by a guest and gained new insights and knowledge about the importance of Fire Safety Awareness. James McMahon of Code Red Fire Safety joined the group today and gave an excellent presentation and provided training on various aspects of Fire Safety and Evacuation.

The levels of engagement displayed by the Youth Academy and the amount of information that they retained was highly impressive, and was in full evidence when James carried out a short quiz, asking questions about everything from what types of fire extinguishers should be used on different classes of fire to how to ensure your own safety when presented with a fire. James was also very impressed by some of the questions asked by the team, many of which he had never been asked before.

James highlighted an (unfortunately) real life example of a fire that tragically ended in the loss of life in a night club in America. He showed how some of the negative behaviours that people can display in a critical situation can result in tragedy. This provided a lot of food for thought within the group as they discussed with James how this could have been avoided through a bit of training, knowledge and more thoughtful action.

Armed with this knowledge, James took the Youth Academy on a short tour of the premises, highlighting the signage displayed to help people evacuate the building safely in the event of fire and discussing the placement and types of fire extinguishers throughout the building.

When the tour was completed, James issued Code Red certificates for everyone that had taken part in the training session, showing what they had covered during the training. The Youth Academy also surprised James by presenting him with a pen and thanking him for joining them today and providing them with additional knowledge that they can use if they ever find the need.

Fire Safety awareness and knowledge of what to do in the event of fire is one of those things in life that we hope we never need put into practice, but thanks to James and Code Red, the Youth Academy team know that they can make the right decisions that could save their own or someone else’s life.

What the Youth Academy learned today will definitly stay with them for the future and by anchoring James by providing him with a gift ensures that he too will remember the day also!
