The start of Karen's Journey
I met Liz on Friday in Matalan. Liz works in the fitting rooms. She was tired and stressed having worked a hard day, however I think on Friday, just as her shift finished, she had a paradigm shift. All day people had been trying clothes on and buying perhaps one item, the rest they dumped in a pile for her to clear through. Bored, overworked, not supported by her colleagues, she was looking pretty tired and down. Her eyes were alight though within 30minutes of watching what Stevie Kidd had started on the journey of Karen.
Karen had never been shopping, had really not taken an interest in investing in her looks. She stood in front of a wall of shoes and I asked her what she liked and what she thought looked good, her response was – “no one has ever asked me that before”. Stevie Kidd had spotted Karen on the Renfrewshire open day and taken time out to meet with her that afternoon and the following day with my colleague Michelle to challenge and discuss some areas before she was allowed onto the course. It turned out she’d never ever bought clothes, had been living with the same few possessions and was not in a positive state.
Michelle and I had taken her to this shop to start her on the process of preparing for the Academy in a good frame of mind and a confident place. Stevie had agreed with her that she needed to take more interest in herself. Liz in the changing rooms commented that it was great that people out there would take an interest in someone like Karen, who from the outside looked lost, but really on the inside, was just needing a helping hand, a change of direction and support to get there. That support on this occaission was Stevie and his training team. “I’m have in a great day” Karen said as she started seeing the change already in herself, the baseball cap gone, the smile appearing and looking forward to the start of Academy 23, with new clothes and a new self belief, this story will keep going……….
