The best way to predict the future is to create it
- Peter Drucker

This morning Stevie took part in the BBC Radio Scotland show “Call Kaye”. The theme of the show was to discuss big ideas for improving Scotland’s future.

This coincides with the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) Forum which is an annual policy and networking event. Now in its 40th year it continues to be a catalyst for change and a key event to set the policy and economic agenda for Scotland.

Attended by 300 senior delegates from business, education, the public sector, trades unions, the third sector, central and local government and the Scottish media, the Forum brings together a world-class programme of wealth creators, international experts and thought leaders.

Janette Harkess Director of Policy and Research with the SCDI opened the show by discussing the premise of the Forum and discussing some of the ‘big ideas’ under discussion.

Stevie was there as someone who not only thinks big but has the vision and strategies to turn them from thoughts to reality. One of the major talking points was the work Stevie and the team do within employability – how do we change the mindsets of unemployed individuals and get them ready for employment.

The show was opened up for callers to give their big ideas on making Scotland better and some of the ideas which came in included:

- Incorporating science in the curriculum for under 5’s
- Lowering the age of voting to 16
- Using hydrogen power for commercial vehicles
- Investment in fitness to combat unhealthy lifestyles
- One car per household

An idea that came up that sounded a bit outrageous to start with but that became more credible as the discussion went on was to take14 and 15 year olds who are not thriving in a classroom environment out and put them into real life work placements. This would give them ‘life skills’ and would help them to focus on what they want to do with their futures.

When I heard the idea it was uncanny as Stevie had a very similar idea that was triggered by a comment from his son. So all I can say on this matter is watch this space!

Getting the country talking about this issue and putting their ideas out there can only be a good thing and we will look forward to seeing what ideas come to fruition from the SCID Forum.

I have experienced first hand the benefits of Stevie''s mentoring sessions, so it was ideal for him to be on the show as more mnay young people can learn his strategy for shaping their futures.
