Stephen Gains Another Qualification

Today I was on the Construction Academy taking part in the First Aid training. This was going to be something new for me as I had no previous First Aid experience. I was looking forward to this because this was an exciting challenge for me.

Ali was providing us with basic first aid training and she gave us an outline of what we can expect from today. The first thing we learned about was what we should do if someone is unconscious. We all got to practice this and we all passed this with no problem. We even had a name for the mannequin we were using - we called him Fred! I enjoyed this because this was a new skill I gained and it is also a useful skill to have.

We had a break and after this we had to practice putting a bandage on in different situations such as a broken collarbone and a deep cut to the head. This was really enjoyable because Ali needed a volunteer for the head bandage and I was the volunteer. The reason I enjoyed this task was because I had the confidence to volunteer to do it and this shows that my confidence has grown since I’ve started working with KDS. We also practised putting people in the recovery position and I found this to be useful because these are basic skills which could help save a life.

We had to cover the theory work and this was basically a recap of what we had learned to do but we also learned what to do in other situations and also signs and symptoms of other major health problems such as burns or heart attacks.

The final part of the training comprised of a test about the skills we gained and what we learned from the theory work. I passed this test which made me feel good because I am now a Certified Basic First Aider.

I’m really happy I got to do this because it’s not what you would expect to do in work experience and these are also skills which I can use in the future if I am ever in a situation where someone becomes unwell and these skills can play a small part in saving someone’s life.
