Persistence

Persistence – the quality of continuing steadily despite problems or difficulties

Yesterday, I met with Stephen Beer, Managing Director of Bridgeall, a successful software development company. I approached Stephen for a meeting as I was looking for some advice regarding my future.

I first met Stephen back when I took part in the Recruit Programme. I did some research on Stephen and found out that he went to Strathclyde University and studied Computer Science. Being undecided as to whether I want to go to university or not, I thought that he would be able to give me some advice based on his experiences. I wanted to know what he has gained from university and how it has helped has career today.

I had some questions prepared on what I wanted to ask Stephen – however he went beyond what I expected from the morning and told me a lot about his career which I found fascinating. With his career based around software development taking many different directions, the key message which stood out for me was persistence. I am sure most of you will agree that not every journey you have embarked on has turned out the way you planned however more often than not; persistence can be lead to success. When something isn’t working, sometimes it may be best to accept this and move on. However, other times all that may be required are a few minor adjustments to the original idea – persistence.

I definitely took a lot from my meeting Stephen and I am very grateful to him for giving up his time.

I would also like to thank Stevie Kidd for his advice, guidance and ultimately letting me away from my busy schedule for the morning!

There are many key messages I have taken back the office with me and will most definitely remember for the future.

I was really impressed with all the preparation and planning you underwent before meeting Stephen and when you came back and told me everything you learned it was clear it had all paid off!
