NATIONAL DOWN’S SYNDROME AWARENESS WEEK
Monday 21st – 27th March 2011 – Build a Brighter Future
This is a national initiative to raise awareness and to focus on specific goals to bring significant improvements into the lives of people with Down’s syndrome.
The society looks back with a sense of satisfaction for the improvements already made but with a clear focus of ensuring that the opportunities for those with Down’s syndrome continue to grow and flourish.
The goals for awareness week 2011 are:
- To safeguard the advances already made
- Demonstrate that with the right level of support people with Down’s syndrome can have successful lives
- Develop a clear path of opportunity for all people with Down’s syndrome
Within KDS and Stevie Kidd People, Stevie has created a specialist work experience programme for individuals who have Down’s syndrome which focuses on improving confidence levels and providing them with a realistic view of the workplace. This programme was given the approval by the Down’s Syndrome Scotland.
The programme is tailored but involves the participants getting involved with a number of office tasks and even shadowing other businesses.
We have documented the story of Mark McKirdy who has completed a number of work experience placements with us.
Mark’s journey can be viewed at http://www.steviekidd.co.uk/people/marks-journey/
The unique approach taken by Stevie has not gone unnoticed and this work in particular was mentioned at the Institute of Directors’ Director of the Year Awards at which Stevie was named as the Director of the Year for Youth Development.
