My First Week contd....
The next day was more about content and the Role of the Careworker, but again this was presented in such a way that the importance of attitudes, behaviours and motivations were also brought in, unlike previous courses I had been on. For example, the cycle of change was explained to the clients, the Johari window was discussed, the learning steps were shown...none of these are directly related to care, but our clients got so much out of these that you could see the change in them afterwards. The next day they came in still buzzing from the day before and even though they said they were tired the enthusiasm was still poring out of them! Today we took the clients to the David Lloyd Leisure centre for a swim, yoga and work out session...think my cousin from derby hit the nail on the head when she said ‘we don’t get special treatment like that...the law must be different in Scotland!” Coming to KDS has been an eye-opening experience...its the kind of company that everyone wants their company to be like! The openness and trust in the office is evident...the team even know the partners of the team members, their friends, their families, their interests, etc and its not unusual to them to know all of this! Its NORMAL to them! I didn’t expect the team to know the name of my husband or where I stay or what I do at college within such a small space of time. I didn’t expect to get a cuddle from Ali the first time I met her or to get a handshake from every member of staff every day I meet them. Yes some people may find this closeness unusual but I am learning to embrace it and run with it and also to let it filter through to my personal life...I told Academy 22 that I am on this journey with them - I have not seen the course before, I don’t know how its delivered or what it contains – and that I will grow and change as they do. The change is already evident to those that know me well...the positive attitude, the patience and the increase in smiling are all things that friends and family have commented on! Am proud to say that I am a part of the KDS team and look forward to my upcoming week and anymore changes it brings!! By Ravinder Rai
