My First Week as an Employee with the KDS Group
The difference was evident from my very first day – The Glasgow Open day, where we began the day by dancing around the training room while frantically setting up equipment before the arrival of clients! Once the clients arrived and their pictures were taken Ali presented a DVD on KDS and the courses we run...clients were watched from the moment they entered the room until the moment they left to look at levels of engagement. I had never been privy to this thorough a selection process so it took me a while to get my head around it! Clients were constantly told that this was their choice, their benefits would not be affected, and therefore there was no stick to beat them with. That would not be their motivation for wanting to be part of this academy. If it was then this course is definitely not the right place for them. And I got a sense from the team that none of them themselves were in this just for the money...there was a strong sense of loyalty and admiration for carrying the KDS name which is easily noticed in the team. I was quickly made to feel part of the team and was carrying boxes and taking pictures before I knew it! The next day this was highlighted again, as my task was simply sit and talk to everyone! This told me straight away how important team work was to the KDS office, and this included every branch, not just the training branch but also distribution, finance, coordination , and everyone else besides! This was a real ‘feel good’ day for me as no one held back and were all open to me and not only did I find out loads about them, they were all interested and took the time (which they had little to spare) to ask me about myself and my situation...this was greatly appreciated! The next day I even spent time out with one of the driver’s – Barry! A very lovely man who totally endorsed the KDS values! He definitely did try to achieve a grade higher than excellence in his work and you could see his passion for his job when he spoke about it. One thing I took away form the day was the amount of organisation that these drivers need to have in order to do their job effectively! From arranging their route to arranging the parcels in the van these guys are constantly three steps ahead! Again I got a taste of how special this company is when they took a special wee boy under their wing – Mark! Mark had been with the company all week for work experience and brought a smile to everyone’s face! All the team wanted to make this a special week for Mark and went to so much effort organising his pressies and rewards not only for him but for his family too! Having a training manager and head of training sticking down photos in a picture frame is not something you see in normal companies and I admire the way that this company has no hierarchy and everyone just gets stuck in! Its impossible not to get sucked in and carried away with all of them. Monday was the first day of Academy 22...by now I knew that the training course would be different from other courses I had worked on and boy was I right! That morning almost everyone in the team sent me a message wishing me luck...another way that this company is different from others. It was a day of info for the guys and by lunchtime they were bonding and discussing their very own personal goals and aspirations-something that normally takes weeks to attain!
