My First Wage by Sarahjane

I have just enjoyed my first weekend after receiving a payslip from KDS, and have had time to reflect on the support I have been given. During the build up to payday, I had contemplated my wages and how I was going to spend them. After the initial excitement, I realised that I had to work out things that I have never had to deal with before, such as tax, and whether I should open a savings account etc. It all seemed slightly daunting and grown-up.

On the Thursday when Lynsey and I looked at our payslip we struggled to understand how tax works, and this was picked up on, so Christine kindly brought us into her office and explained how everything works. Lynsey and I have both had jobs previously and were never offered this kind of support, which just further reinforces how unique KDS are, and how they strongly focus on the people they work with. After this, Stevie had a short meeting with us where he explained the importance of managing our money, and how it would be wise to save up for the future as we may rely on it sometime. He also advised us to buy something memorable, which will remind us of the feeling we had when we received our first wage, as this will soon wear off as the year progresses.

From this, Stevie then went on to work on getting the RBS’s moneysense scheme in to give us a more in-depth session on managing finances, but this time it will focus on years from now also. I really appreciate this as it shows that Stevie is thinking about us and our future’s even after we have finished our year here, again proving we are heavily supported here.
