Moving forward when times are tough!
There are times that life hits you like a ton of bricks and knocks you down! But as we know it’s not about how hard you get hit, to be a true champion it’s about how hard you get hit and how you find the strength to get back up again! It’s having the will to keep going and beating the obstacles! (Think Rocky!)
But how do we do pick ourselves up and get back in the driving seat of life? Here are some strategies to get you right back up and moving forward!
1. Give up on regret and learn from mistakes! Learn to forgive yourself, everyone has made mistakes with friends, jobs, decisions but dwelling on these and spending too much time regretting them will just pull you down and keep you stuck in the past unable to move forward! Learn from the situation - review it, evaluate what worked and what didn’t, and more importantly, why. Looking at a situation objectively allows you to make better choices to keep moving forward! Regret is an emotion – recognise it, admit it, learn from it and walk on to the next part of your life with your head held high!
2. Believe you are worth it! It’s not by chance they use the slogan “because you’re worth it!” in adverts for a certain brand of hair products. The lower your self esteem the less you think you are worthy of picking yourself up, you hear the negative voice that says “you’re not worth anything, why would you expect anything different” The negative voice gets louder the closer you get to achieving your goal or dream, switch the voice in your head for one that says “ you are worth this, you have worked hard for it and you deserve it after all the steps you have taken to get here!” Whatever brand of hair products you use, embed the slogan “because you’re worth it!” in your head – repeat often and believe it!
3. Take responsibility! Other than on those very rare and exceptional circumstances YOU are the person who is responsible for the quality of your life! Sometimes we choose to ignore difficult situations but all this is doing is deferring the pain!! Take responsibility – listen to the Positive inner voice that is saying “you can make this situation better” and don’t forever have to live with the one that says “you gave up to soon – again!”
4. Know what you want, and want it more! To pick yourself up and move forward you need to know where you want to go! And more than that you need to really, really want it! Getting knocked down and picking yourself back up shows your determination and resolve to achieve your goal and answers any doubting questions you might have about whether this is the best course of action!!
5. Ask for help! Trust that this experience that has knocked you down has happened for a reason, and although it can feel like it you are not on your own in the situation! At times we all need to ask for help – whether it is an answer, an action, some support, a shoulder to cry on or a hand to hold. It can be a hard thing to do, often we don’t feel like we deserve help or our pride stops us from asking as we don’t want to be seen as weak. It is worth remembering that we are surrounded by people for a reason – for support and to learn from them. We can always learn something from others in the same way that they will learn something from us.
