Ministers unveil double jobs boost for Scotland

Scotland is to be handed a boost of 500 jobs following funding announcements from both the Scottish and UK governments. £34 million European cash boost would be used to create 200 new posts and safeguard thousands more across the country.
Meanwhile, Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy announced 300 positions were to be created by the Future Jobs Fund in Fife and Argyll and Bute.
Both politicians made the announcements while attending a jobs summit in Glasgow, where a scheme to provide additional cash for businesses taking on apprentices was also unveiled.
Mr Salmond said the Scottish Government would use all of its "economic levers" to get Scotland through the recession.
And he said the announcement would "deliver vital support such as training opportunities to communities across Scotland, helping 28,000 individuals find fresh employment while assisting business growth, urban regeneration and rural development".
Mr Salmond added: "This Government is committed to working with our partners in local authorities, enterprise networks, the voluntary sector, the business community, unions and colleges and universities to ensure that Scotland is an attractive environment for investment, with the skilled workforce and quality infrastructure required for success.
"Our Economic Recovery Plan has directly supported up to 15,000 jobs in the Scottish economy and this further investment will build on our efforts."
Around £18 million of cash from the European Social and Regional Development funds will to used to create 170 jobs in the Highlands and Islands and support 43 local projects, safeguarding 5,000 jobs.
A further £16 million will be used to help 23,000 people find work in Glasgow, Dundee, East Ayrshire, Fife, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire and West Lothian.
