KDS Road safety report

Driver: ALAN DUNN
Route: route 10

Vehicle: MF09 FEV Story: REBEKKA

Has there been any reaction regarding the van from anyone either;

• In the Pharmacies – There’s been no reaction this week, probably because i am in the loading bay & haven’t met any of the pharmacy staff there this week.

• In the nursing homes - Outside Ailsa Craig the other evening i spoke to a gent who had been visiting a relative, he asked what kind of company I worked for. I explained that i worked for a distribution company that delivered pharmaceutical products as well as other products. The gent said he was very impressed with the fact that a distribution company (with white vans) was doing its bit to promote road safety as he used to be a van driver & he knew from past experiences that van drivers always had a bad name for their driving skills mainly due to a minority that would drive as though they owned the roads. I told the gent about our other road safety vans & that they had different messages on each side. The gent said the wraps on each side of my van had certainly got his attention & he hoped that the messages would be implanted into the minds of other road users who abuse their positions behind the wheel.

• On the road, other drivers/pedestrians – I was parked outside a bakers shop at lunchtime the other day when i spoke to two female home carers. They asked about the van & i showed them the wraps on each side. The women said it saddened them that the Rebekka story was true life. One of the carers said she was just taking driving lessons at the moment & she said that the thought of her causing a death on the road would be unbearable & it would put her off learning to drive. I explained to her that most drivers on the road were safe as long as they learned about road safety & kept to the speed limits etc. The women said they enjoyed chatting to me & I gave the two of them each a leaflet.

• In the workplace - After Phil joined me at store we discussed the road safety van. I asked Phil what he thought about driving the road safety van. Phil explained to me that it would upset a member of his family. It reminded me of the first time i had the Ben & Aaron van. I was a bit unsure of taking it home as my wife’s nephew had been killed outside his house In Crookston Road 2005 (aged 11) by a van driver & i thought it would bring back some painful memories. I spoke to my wife about the van & she reassured me that any road safety messages that raised awareness was good & she didn’t mind the van being parked outside our house.

How would you say the reaction has been?
• Positive – Always a positive reaction.
• Negative-
• Indifferent –
• Has there been any particular reaction that you remember, if so could you describe it- The reaction of one of the home care workers, she was genuinely unsure about continuing her driving lessons as she said she could never forgive or live with herself if she ever caused a fatality due to her driving. I reassured her as best as i could.

.
Is there any way you can market the road safety vehicle?
E.G. Could you park outside a TV station, Radio, news paper offices for 5 – 10 Minuets s to have a cup of tea / Coffee? I think it would be a good idea to have the road safety vans parked for an afternoon possibly in a supermarket car park with kds drivers handing out road safety leaflets. This could be done on a Sunday as a lot of families go out shopping together. We could get a few of the vans together with the drivers giving some spare time to answer questions.
