KDS Induction - Day Two

Day 2.

Day one was great, it hit the mark and I felt immediately at home with the team.

Day Two of my induction was going to give me the opportunity to observe the selection process of a new Academy. The DVD’s I’d watched, from previous Academies, showed the real change in the people selected from day one through to their graduation at the end of week four. The Journey. So today I’m on my own journey as I start it along with 40+ potential Academy candidates in a conference room at Reid Kerr College.
The training team have clearly planned this event with care and understanding, knowing that each person attending has their own story, has their own hopes and fears, but have been brave enough to take the first step on that journey and come along to find out what the Academy – this one specifically designed for the Care Sector – was all about and how it could lead to sustainable employment.
Over a fast paced two hours the purpose and outline of the 4 week Academy concept was presented, but the core of the presentation was exactly like the core of KDS Group – Stevie Kidd. He energised the room, took the candidates on a whirlwind tour covering his own story, his own journey, and let them glimpse the possibility of moving their lives away from long term unemployment, into not just a fulfilling work life, but an ongoing improvement to their life outside of work too.
After the presentation Stevie stayed around to speak to anyone who wished to chat, while the Training Team had a queue of people who wanted to book their place on Academy number 17 which would start the following week. Not everyone will get on the course; 40 needed to be taken down 16 candidates to be invited onto the course.
The remainder of the day was taken up with short one to one selection interviews to gauge the suitability of candidates for the course, their desire to see it through and find sustainable employment in the Care sector. One observation was clear. At every point throughout the day, each person was treated as an individual, was shown courtesy, was shown respect regardless of their length of time on benefit, their personal circumstances or their confidence; the Team interacted with genuine belief that those who wanted to change their circumstances, could do so. By the end of the day, we had the final 16 and the next step on their journey was about to happen.

My journey is continuing too. Stevie told me to “lose the tie”, to relax into the company culture. I spoke to Paul, the Transport Manager and found out about his story and another piece of the KDS picture took its place. There is an honesty in the company, a feeling of people being real. I’m looking forward to taking another step on my own journey.
