Building your own legacy and the roles models who can help

As The Recruit builds to an exhilarating finish I have had the chance to speak to the candidates within their groups.

In one group session I asked them to raise their hands if they wanted to go to university. The vast majority did.

However, when I asked them to raise their hands to confirm if they had in their mind the name of 14 companies that they wanted to work for, less were raised.

I used this small task to demonstrate that they must all, as we all should, be focussed on their goals via their time line.

What you want to achieve today, this week, in 12 months, 3 years, 10 years and in life?

Without a time line and targets you can start to lose focus.

I asked the candidates to contact the companies that they really wanted to work for. To write directly to the CEO and to write every 3 months.

They must communicate, set their goals and control their own legacy.

I gave the Recruits the example of my son, Ryan.

He is moving from primary to high school this summer. A difficult move that we have all experienced.

New faces, new teachers, new school, new challenges.

I wrote to the headmaster of his new school and included a video Ryan had made called “Who am I?”.

The aim of the email was not only to ensure the headmaster understood who Ryan is but to also let Ryan share his own aims and targets in high school and beyond.

I also spoke to the candidates about my strong feelings on the benefit of having role models. Muhammad Ali and Alex Ferguson are amongst mine.

I explained to them that they should all have role models. Someone they can look up to and take inspiration from.

Their teenage years will bring up issues as it naturally does.

However, there will always be tough moments in later years, personally and professionally, and those role models can be a foundation to keep their spirits high and to always retain that focus.

Have you thought about who your role models are?

Do you have that timeline in place to control your own legacy?
