Bed and Breakfast!

It was a week of highs for the young people of the Activities Agreement who are on the Youth Academy which runs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday! We conquered the difficult subject of Manual Handling and showed that we are more than capable of carrying this out correctly in the workplace! We arranged for two of the candidates to go out with a driver from distribution – one for a taster of a live job scenario and one who will continue to work with the driver with an end view of further training in the logistics sector! One candidate worked with an employer (LK Beauty)and a member of the Future Focus Academy to re-search the training necessary for this role and we are now looking into when we she can go through the two initial courses which will give her solid foundations to build upon for this career. They will meet again this coming week to work on some basic skills that she will utilise in the job!

One of our candidates has been put in charge of project managing the work that we are looking to do to our downstairs training room! Identifying resources, costing, buying, planning and organising and working with a fully trained painter and decorator to build on his skills that he will need to work in the construction sector! A huge leap in the direction which he wants to take his life! This has been a brilliant week for this candidate as you will soon discover!

Friday saw us head out for breakfast with Stevie Kidd a good opportunity for the candidates to interact with each other and Stevie out of their comfort zone of the office. Candidates did not know this was going to happen and were thrilled with the opportunity! During this time we received a phone call to say that one of our candidates had been made the offer of a house, this is another leap forward for this young person who has been homeless since he started on the Academy. KDS, Activities Agreement staff and Throughcare staff have all been working together to make this happen! Breakfast turned immediately into a celebration and the delight and excitement was evident on his face for the rest of this time!

Did this group leave a lasting impression on Fred (the owner) and his team? KDS and the Academy candidates would like to thank Fred and his team at Castlevecchi for their breakfast and the experience! Indeed they did – handshakes all rounds, manners all round, great communication and interpersonal skills were shown by each of the young people! The coming week will see us chart using this how far they have come since week one – with behaviour, language and how they come across to others!

Keep watching to hear how the candidates recognise the changes in themselves and what changes the staff have noticed!!

Kate I can see from the blog that the academy is going from strength to strength and I believe the high levels of attendance highlight how much the young people are getting out of it. keep up the good work and I look forward to further updates. Winnie
