Astra Petas [Aim for the Stars]

By Edmund McKay, Head of Care, Group KDS

I went to see Peter Mullan’s new film NEDS the other evening, NED stands for ‘Non Educated Delinquents’, and the film charts the fall of its main character John who is a bright educated young person determined to make it in school, but he's plagued by the negative reputation of his older brother. The film shows how easy it is for bored teenagers to fall in to trouble as John joins a gang more for company and friendship and begins his self fulfilling prophecy, as his teachers give up on him and put him in lower classes, he cannot progress and as a result starts to ignore his own intelligence.

What NEDS also shows is what we at KDS Care believe and that’s there is good in everybody and it’s our job to work with the people we support to recognise the potential that lies behind their difficulties and encourage our clients to aim for the stars. For John it could all have been so different. If only his teachers had recognised his potential, if only his friends mother hadn't snubbed him, if only his aunt was around more, if only..................

If only an organisation like KDS Care had been there to work with, support and care about John.

An excellent critique and point very well made! All to often I have found those who are classed as "NEDS" have a very high level of ability and talent and they are judged on the same reputation as other members of their family or group of friends. A self-fulfilling phrophecy indeed! K
