Another Executive experience for Stephen
Today I arrived at KDS at 7.40am. Stevie was already in the office and mentored me for the day ahead. Today I was shadowing Square Circle, a Human Resources organisation. As I was to be at Square Circle for 10.30 am, I used my time wisely so I had to print off my agenda for the past two weeks so my folder was being kept up to date.
I left KDS at 9.30 am and took the train to Glasgow. When I arrived at Glasgow I walked to the Pentagon Centre. When I arrived I met Mary Harkin, the HR Consultant. I shadowed her until about 12 o’clock then I had a chat with Roz Wood, one of the directors. The both of them told me what their jobs involved and what Human Resources is and what skills and qualities you would need to work in HR.
Mary spoke to me about “The Employment Circle” which involves helping employees from when they begin work in an organisation until they leave. She also told me about the different legislations that are in place and how HR is involved with Health and Safety. Square Circle doesn’t have a Health and Safety department but Mary said Square Circle is in partnership with 3dotdash, an organisation which provides information and support on Health and Safety.
When I was shadowing Roz, she told me all about what the main functions of HR are. HR is about managing people in the most effective way and getting them to work to a high standard. Roz said that the best resource any organisation has is its staff. This ties in with Stevie Kidd’s values and beliefs which is about helping others and investing in his staff. Roz told me about how HR prioritise and set targets and deadlines for what they want to achieve.
Alison arrived at 12.45 pm as she had to visit a client. She had her lunch and at 1pm I got to interview her. During this interview I asked her questions on what her values were and what motivates her. Alison says one of her main motivations is teamwork and she believes everyone should be treated with respect and she said she has a “Can Do” attitude. After the interview I saw what Alison does and at 1.45pm she had an interview so I presented her with a pen as this will be an anchor so any time she uses it, she will remember me.
At 2pm I left Square Circle and took the train back to Paisley and arrived at KDS at 2.30pm. I’ve learned a lot from today and it was very interesting. Thanks to Stevie Kidd and KDS group and Alison Welsh and Square Circle for allowing me to have this opportunity.
